Storm King Art Center, Arrival, Conservation & Fabrication | New York
New York
Storm King Art Center is a 500-acre outdoor museum located in New York’s Hudson Valley, where visitors experience large-scale sculpture and site-specific commissions under open sky. The welcome and arrival sequence builds upon the outdoor ethos of Storm King with essential buildings shaping an outdoor room, a welcoming “lobby” which gently guides visitors from arrival into Storm King.
The brief was to locate and design supporting buildings and services that provide superlative visitor experience, increase opportunities for art and artists, and sustain Storm King’s leadership in art and nature, while maintaining the strong landscape relationships that are created with the sculpture.
A new southern hub is created for the Conservation, Fabrication and Maintenance building. Service traffic is accommodated in the south allowing the existing northern entrance to be dedicated to visitors.
The design of the Conservation, fabrication and Maintenance building has a directness that reflects its use, its siting carefully nestled into the landscape.
