Storm King Art Center, New York

New York

Storm King Art Center’s first major capital project led by heneghan peng architects with WXY in NYC, enhances arrival, expands outdoor exhibition space, and introduces a state-of-the-art conservation and fabrication facility. A rethought arrival sequence gathers all visitors in an “Outdoor Lobby,”. Centered on the ethos of building only what’s necessary, the radically reduced built footprint uses fewer materials and less energy and prioritises the visitor’s engagement with nature.

A rethought arrival sequence gathers all visitors in an "Outdoor Lobby," a threshold that transitions between the outside world and the museum. Consolidating parking eliminates vehicles within the Art Center and reclaims five acres of former parking lots. A serpentine walkway, calibrated to reveal key views, guides visitors through the terrain.

Sustainability is integral to every element of the design, centered around an essential principle of building only what’s necessary. By radically reducing the built footprint of the new construction, the project not only uses less materials upfront but also drastically reduces energy consumption in perpetuity. Shutters are deployed to allow varying seasonal configurations reflecting the dramatic changes in climatic conditions at Storm King.

The Conservation, Fabrication, and Maintenance building supports large-scale art conservation, material experimentation, ecological research, and in-house fabrication. The building is located to roads through the site. It is designed to optimize energy efficiency by allowing occupants to harness passive ventilation and natural lighting, retaining as much treated air as possible through mechanical energy recovery and a high insulation enclosure, and minimizing temperature setpoints as staff frequently move between indoors and outdoors.
